ZINE "POM'YATNYK" 2020

"POM'YATNYK" 2О2О
This zine-digest is a collection of findings from streets in the cities of Odesa,
Kyiv and Wolverhampton (England) from 2019-2020. Zine is based on the collectors’ gaze, as they explore the street’s «pom’yatnyki», which belong to junk when left without attention.
The idea for zine started with this acacia branch.
One day, while walking in the Starobazarny Square in Odesa, I saw an unusual promoter. He pasted ads on the leaves of acacia — a tree that is considered a symbol of our city. When he left, I went closer and saw that this ad was for seafarers looking for work.
I was struck by his approach, because he combined two significant symbols for the sea city in order to attract more attention to advertising.
I thought: "If the promoter has thought of this, then I also can put all my finds from the streets, accumulated over the years, into one big urban puzzle."
I preserved this moment by laminated the same ad and 14 sheets of acacia.
The publication aims to find like-minded people — collectors, archivists,
researchers, and simply observers of the environment. Everyone can contribute to the
series of zines; it’s just a matter of your attentivity and selectivity.
The only condition — it must be a paper finding. Email your treasures to volno.mjane@gmail.com
